Scheduling and Fees

It is with great pleasure and anticipation that I begin the process of capturing an individual's likeness, personality and spirit in his or her portrait. My goal is that this important endeavor not only be pleasurable for all parties involved, but that it will be an heirloom to be enjoyed for years to come.

Phase One:  The Agreement
Anyone interested in a portrait is entitled to a free consultation meeting to talk about all the possibilities available.  Once an agreement has been made as to size, mood, clothing, background, medium and price, the photography and preliminary sketching time may begin.  Often this occurs at this first meeting.  A 30% down payment is required at this time and an “agreement” is signed by both parties noting all that was discussed. Below is a fee overview.

Phase Two:  Planning the Portrait
Reference photos are necessary when it is impractical for a subject to sit for long periods of time.  Sketches are made to capture exact colors and values, as well as to get a feel for the character of the person.  This session usually is accomplished in a few hours or less, depending on the age.  Occasionally the client is contacted before final views are determined, but usually I prefer making the final decision as to which photograph will serve as the primary source of reference.  If detailed backgrounds are desired it is possible for the photo session to take place in the home or office of the subject.

Phase Three:  Painting the Portrait
This process usually takes two to six months (from the time the reference photos are finalized), depending upon the complexity of the commission. For large, multiple figure paintings, the time may be longer. When the portrait is nearly finished, the subject will pose for a final sitting in order to check details such as eye color, hair changes, etc.

Phase Four: The Completed Portrait
After the final sitting, the painting, if in oil, is ready to dry completely before receiving a clear, museum quality varnish.  This enhances all the colors and evens out the surface.  Framing possibilities are discussed and the option to purchase one of my classical gold frames is offered.  For pastels, framing should take place immediately (using UV protected glass), however, the longevity of pastel is as durable as oil, if not better.  A final payment is required at this time.
